Suction and discharge hoses are the heart of any pumping operation: agricultural irrigation, site dewatering, liquid transfer or drainage. Understanding the difference between suction and discharge prevents the wrong purchase and premature failure.

Suction vs. discharge

On the suction side the pump creates a vacuum to "pull" the liquid. Here the hose must resist collapse, which is why it carries a rigid helical reinforcement (a PVC or wire helix) that keeps the bore open. On the discharge side the liquid exits under pressure, and a flexible hose without a helix —like a layflat— is usually enough.

Why a hose collapses

When a smooth-wall hose is used for suction, the vacuum crushes it and blocks the flow. It's the most common mistake. The fix is to always use a spiral hose on the suction side and respect the pump diameter.

Materials and temperature

PVC is economical, transparent and handles water well between -10 °C and 60 °C. For abrasive slurries or chemicals, rubber hoses or special linings should be evaluated.

Installation tips

  • Use proper clamps and, on suction, make sure no air gets in.
  • Avoid tight bends near the pump: they reduce flow.
  • Keep the suction hose as short and straight as possible.
  • Screen the inlet to protect the impeller.
