Hoses are consumables, but that doesn't mean they should fail without warning. A simple preventive maintenance program reduces downtime, accidents and costs. Here's a routine you can apply in any workshop or operation.
Periodic visual inspection
At least once per shift on critical equipment, check for:
- Cracks, blisters or worn cover.
- Leaks at the fittings (never with your hand: use cardboard).
- Exposed or corroded steel reinforcement.
- Twisted, crushed or edge-rubbing hoses.
Date and pressure control
Log the installation date. Many failures come from exceeding the recommended service life. Verify that the actual working pressure does not exceed the hose's rating.
Routing and protection
80% of premature wear comes from poor routing: tight bends, rubbing and torsion. Use guides, protective spring guards and respect the minimum bend radius.
Correct storage
Store spare hoses in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. PVC and rubber degrade with heat and UV, which is relevant in Panama's climate.
Safety first
Install whip check cables on pressurized air and water lines. In case of a hydraulic fluid leak, depressurize before working: a high-pressure jet can penetrate skin.
